Simplifying Gift Giving This Christmas

Hello There, Friend.

There's this idea that I came across a while back which I thought was absolutely brilliant. A way to simplify Christmas gift giving and help dial down how excessive our Christmas' have become.

What's this idea you ask? "The Four Gift Rule." Though, I've decided to add in a fifth that I believe can bring much joy to the recipient. So... let's call this the 5 Gift Guideline.

The 5 Gift Guideline

 Something they want.
Something they need.
Something to wear.
Something to read.

...and as a bonus
Something to do.

We've become so accustomed to spending money on acquiring bigger, "better"... more! We end up spending money that we sometimes don't have, which means we put ourselves in unnecessary debt. And for what? Material possessions that are most likely going to be a five minute entertainment, then thrown in the corner for you to deal with later? Why? That's just ridiculous!

I'll admit, I did learn this lesson the hard way. When my son was little our tree was full of things he did not need on Christmas Morning. All my excessive buying to make what I thought was going to be the 'perfect' Christmas just ended up overwhelming both of us. My son had too many toys to choose from, and I had too many toys to keep organized and clean. It was absurd! So now... during these teen years I try to keep our Christmas' pretty simple around here. I've seen the light! Better late, than never.

"It's not what's under the tree that matters. It's who's gathered around it."
-Charlie Brown

This Christmas I really want you to think about the things you are choosing for your loved ones. Think about the five gift guideline and how you can perhaps implement it into your buying habits. Try to cut back on the impulse purchases you make while thinking it's what's needed to create the 'perfect' Christmas. You do not need to have a million and one material possessions laid beneath your tree for your family to be happy. What truly matters is those gathered around it. I promise!

5 Gift Guideline

Something They Want

Choose something that they've been asking for. But when doing so... make sure it stays within budget and isn't too extravagant. The goal here is to 'simplify' the holidays.

Something They Need

Chances are if it's something that they need... you would most likely be buying it anyways. But you can definitely add it in as a Christmas present this time of year.

Something To Wear

You can definitely be practical in buying something they need here. But, maybe you could choose a special clothing item that you wouldn't necessarily buy during other times of the year. A special holiday outfit, perhaps?

Something To Read

Whether it be by way of Paperbacks, Magazines, or E-books. Whatever your choice, encourage your loved ones to get reading this holiday!

...And As A Bonus

Something To Do

Give the gift of experiences. That could mean Movie Tickets, Restaurant Gift Cards, Tickets to a sporting event, Museum Passes... the possibilities are endless. Choose something you think your loved one would truly love getting out to experience.

And please... always remember... the most precious gift at Christmas is the gift of your time. Time spent with those you love, creating memories... is Priceless!

"Maybe Christmas, he thought... doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps... means a little bit more."
-The Grinch

One final note; I encourage you to think about supporting 'local' for your Want, Need, Wear, Read, and Experience gifts this Christmas. You can find many local treasures if you look for them. Read why I think supporting local is so great here.

As Always

Much Love,
